Renting with Pets
As more people become renters, particularly in the senior age group PAPA has campaigned heavily to ensure pets can stay with their owners. The recent changes to the Residential Tenancies Act to reduce discrimination against renters with pets, will improve access to pet-friendly rental accomodation. A Factsheet on what these changes mean is available here.
Aged Care
More aged care facilities are now accepting pets. There is a list available here of pet friendly aged care facilities. You can also do a search of pet friendly retirement villages here. We also suggest contacting an aged care organisation even if they are not listed as pet friendly. In some cases they are able to be flexible, particularly for small pets. Just be sure to confirm your pet is able to be housed before signing any contracts, even if the facility is listed as pet-friendly.
Retirement Homes
Retirement homes and properties under Strata Title have different arrangements for pets. You will need to check with the Strata Committee or Body Corporate before moving in with your pet. More information is available here.
Moving with Cats
If you are moving home with your cats, bear in mind there are now some suburbs in Canberra that are Cat Containment suburbs. For these areas your cat will need to be indoors or within a secure shelter. Perfect Pens in Canberra can customise a pet shelter to your premises if required. For tips on moving with cats, there are some useful guidelines here. Keeping your cat restricted to one room in the house and using Feliway cat pheromones will help to settle them in initially.
